Max Overacts, the fantastic webcomic created by Caanan Grall is something we’ve talked about a lot on this site. We call Caanan an honorary member of team F’ing Monkey because he is the person who designed our mascot Punch. That means anything Caanan puts out, I’m going to promote as much as I possibly can.
Way back in August I had pointed everyone towards the fundraising page so Caanan could print the first volume of Max comics. If you donated enough to get a book, you’re in luck. The books have left the printer and should start shipping sometime in Mid-March. If you didn’t donate during the fundraiser, you can go to the Occasional Comics store and pre-order your copy now!
In case you can’t tell, I feel pretty strongly about this book. If you haven’t read any of Max Overacts, check out the Occasional Comics website. I honestly can’t imagine anyone not wanting a collected edition after they start reading it.

7 Days Left for Max!
I know, I know. I keep putting up links to awesome things to spend money on. I get it. I have to mention this though because of how strongly I feel about it. There are 7 more days to donate to the Max Overacts Volume One project at IndieGoGo. I wish I could donate more. I can’t, so I’m making sure you all know about it.
We’ve talked about Caanan Grall’s web comic three times before this, so yeah I’m a fan. Don’t take my word for it though. Go to occasionalcomics.com and read it for yourself. Humor, deep characters, touching stories, amazing art, it has everything. I’ve mentioned numerous times Caanan is also the artist who designed our very own monkey mascot Punch. So we have to help him out.
Now I know if you go to the auction you’ll see it is very possible he won’t make his goal. While sad, this isn’t the same as a Kickstarter auction. You’re donation will still go through regardless of meeting the goal or not. What is going to happen is a smaller number of books will be printed then initially hoped for. If you donate enough for a book, you’ll still receive a copy.
Again, click HERE and pre-order yourself a book or help out how ever you can.

Max Overacts Volume One
We interrupt our regularly scheduled Hangover Thursday for some important news. We’ve talked about our love for the web comic Max Overacts a couple times here. Max’s creator, Caanan Grall, is also the person who provided the art for our very own mascot Punch. In addition to all that, I probably bother the poor guy with too many emails.
Caanan is currently putting together the first collection of Max Overacts strips and he needs our help. Books aren’t cheap, so to help with that he has set up an Indie GoGo site. Much like a Kickstater fund raiser there are a bunch of different donation options and rewards. 25 dollars will get you the book, 160 a book and one of the original strips, 500 will get you a guest appearance, etc…
The book is going to be 164 full color pages and measures 8x10. Not only will it contain the first 142 strips, there are 12 never before seen strips involving Max’s sister. I really want this book. You should want this book. Caanan is also looking for information on your local shops and has wholesale rewards for those shops.
Again the link to make a pledge is right HERE. Please check it out and pass it on to everyone who would be interested.

Max is Back!!
Lately comic related announcements have filled me with more dread then excitement. Not this time though, because there is good news about one of my favorite web comics. Max is back!! We have talked about Max Overacts before. Besides just talking about the comic; we’ve also sang the praises of Max’s creator, Caanan Grall numerous times. He is the artist responsible for designing our mascot Punch, so that totally makes him an honorary member of Team F’ing Monkey in my book.
If you’ve been reading Max Overacts you already know that the comic went on a hiatus on March 16th. Then, like a shining ray of hope the site popped up that Max was returning on June 1st. The wait was excruciatingly long, but Max has finally returned! If you’ve never read the Eisner nominated strip before, get ready for a wonderful story of a young boy who takes things to the extreme. Amazing art is joined together with a story that can be funny, sad, or heart warming.

As excited as I am about the strip’s return, I totally understand Caanan’s break on it. Making monies sadly gets in the way of the fun stuff we want to do. So go to occasionalcomics.com and check out the new Max strip but while you’re there remember that Caanan has an excellent Etsy store that sells his awesomeness in paper and ink form.

F'ing Monkey Overacts for Max
On the first post of the year we had our big reveal of Punch, which I’ve been holding back for a couple of weeks now. In that post I mentioned he was designed by Caanan Grall, well Caanan has a website named Occasional Comics Disorder where he runs the web comic Max Overacts. I’ll go ahead and say it; Max Overacts is my favorite web comic out there right now. It is something you need to read.
So what is this wonderful web comic about? The star is Max, of course, a creative and overly dramatic kid, hence the title. His best friend is Curio, a ventriloquist dummy. His best human friend is Klaus. Then you have his family; Mom, Dad, and older sister Andi. The other important character is Janet, the child television star that Max is obsessed with. Obviously there are other characters, teachers, neighbors, etc… but those are the ones you need to know about from the start.
The strip is incredible because one day you’ll get Max ranting about social upheaval, the upcoming apocalypse or something along those lines and then the next strip can totally change directions and be a heart warming bit of tenderness between Max and his Mom. His family teases and antagonizes each other in a way that feels totally realistic. Mom and Dad are just used for the setup of the next joke, they seem like real people. More then that, they seem like people you'd like to know.
The fact that Caanan is a fantastic artist doesn’t hurt anything either. A lot of my appreciation for his art comes from the facial expressions he uses. Sometimes detailed, sometimes minimalistic, you know exactly what the character is thinking or feeling. While often hilarious, many of the strips would work even without the dialouge. Not that the dialouge is bad. Who else can turn E Gon Spangler into an exclamation? He also has a knack for drawing attractive, realistic (ie non-Power Girl-like) women. That sounded a little creepier then I meant it so...moving on.
You can also check out Caanan’s art on Comic Book Resources weekly feature, The Line is Drawn. Pick up some of his original art at his Etsy store. Or order the collection of the strip Celadore that he did for Zuda comics.
So head on over to Occasional Comics Disorder, enjoy the Max, and leave some comments over there. The strips deserve praise and I comment over there so much already that Caanan probably thinks I’m stalking him. Tell him That F'ing Monkey sent you...or leave that part out, you know, the whole stalking thing.
