Scribblenauts Unmasked Reveal Part 2

Welcome to the second part of our Scribblenauts character reveal.  Scribblenauts Unmasked is a puzzle game with a huge database of DC characters.  Last week I named 10 fairly obscure characters that I wanted to see make the game.  Yesterday we covered the first 5 and only 2 of my picks actually made it into the game.  Today’s list is made up of the remaining 5.  Read below to see who made the video game cut. 

Wild Dog

Wild Dog is in the game!  I was thrilled to see that hockey mask.  The odd thing is that in his history the game lists him active in Chicago.  Wild Dog was from the Quad Cities.  I should probably be ashamed that I knew that.  Anyway, Wild Dog is one of my favorite comic characters so I’m glad he made it into the game.

G.I. Robot

G.I. Robot is in the game!  J.A.K.E. is listed as a member of the Creature Commandos in the game.  For some reason he looks pretty angry in the game, I’m not really sure why they did that. 

Simon Dark

Simon Dark is not in the game.  Despite being based in Gotham, I don’t know that Simon is totally owned by DC.  I have a feeling that has something to do with it. 

Terrific Whatzit

The Terrific Whatzit is not in the game.  His nephew is in the game!  This isn’t really surprising; Fastback is far better known than Whatzit.  The Crash, the super fast turtle for the Just Alot of Animals is not in the game either.

Probert

Probert is not in the game.  Hardly surprising, this was the most obscure character on my list.  Still, it would have been fun.

So only 4 of my 10 characters actually made it into Scribblenauts Unmasked.  This makes it seem like the character database is lacking.  It isn’t.  I’ve had more fun typing random characters into the Batcomputer than actually playing the game.  Check back tomorrow for some more in depth Flash coverage.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Part 2

Yesterday we started talking about Scribblenauts Unmasked, a DC comics version of the hit puzzle game Scribblenauts.  One of the big hype points of the game is the sheer number of DC characters that are said to be included.  A claim like that ensured the first thing I would do when I got the game would be to throw some strange and obscure characters just to see if they are included. 

We already covered the first five characters yesterday and today we’re going to cover five more.  When the game comes out later this month I’ll post all the results and include some screen shots of the Scribblenaut version for each of the characters that made it into the game. 

Wild Dog

DC’s 1997 answer to Marvel’s Punisher is one of my favorite comic characters.  Much like the “Dark Flash” from yesterday, Wild Dog’s identity was kept from the readers.  His first mini-series followed a few potential people that Wild Dog could be and in the end revealed him to be ex-Marine Jack Wheeler.  After his four issue series Wild Dog was part of Action Comics Weekly.  After that he’s been used incredibly sparingly.  He had a cameo in Infinite Crisis and in an issue of Booster Gold after that he’s been mostly forgotten. 

G.I. Robot

I had to dive into my own backlog of posts for this one because I was sure that I had already written about J.A.K.E.; I was wrong.  There have been a number of characters named G.I. Robot, Joe and Mac appeared in Weird War Tales in 1962 and 1966.  When most people here the name they think of J.A.K.E. 1 and J.A.K.E. 2 who showed up in Weird War Tales in 1981 and 1982.  Jakes’s big power seems to be sacrificing himself for others.  Expect a full write up on J.A.K.E. 2’s first appearance, it’s a book I picked off the spinner rack as a kid and it is amazing.

Simon Dark

Simon debuted in his own mini-series in 2007.  The dark book took place in a side of Gotham that most had never seen before.  Created by Steve Niles and Scott Hampton Simon the character was actually stitched together with science and magic.  Things for Simon get very, very weird.  The big question about his inclusion in Scribblenauts will be if he is wholly owned by DC or partially creator owned.  Either way it’d be great to see Simon included.

Terrific Whatzit

I had to go silly at some point didn’t I?  The Terrific Whatzit is a character that debuted way back in 1944.  This funny animal version of the Golden Age Flash is a turtle who removes his shell when he dons his costume.  Without his shell no one can tell what kind of animal he is, so everyone calls him a Whatzit.  I’d say his chances are pretty slim to actually make the game.  They may surprise me though and include characters like the Zoo Crew.

Probert

Scribblenauts Unmasked will forever be my favorite game if they include this one.  Probert was introduced in a 1994 issue of Green Lantern Corps Quarterly.  He is based off of the hockey player Bob Probert.  Probert is a bounty hunter that was offered a power ring to bring in another Lantern that has gone rogue.  Probert refused to wear a ring and set off on his own.  Eventually he internalized the ring’s power and took down the other Lantern.  He made a few appearances in Guy Gardner: Warrior but hasn’t been seen since then.

Comic adaptations that would scare me

No bar last night due to some other issues, so we’ll talk some comics. I got a text from Brandon the other day, in what seemed like seconds after the story broke, “What do you think about the xXx writer doing the script for Iron Fist?”  As a big Iron Fist fan, it was kinda scary.  We've talked a lot about accepting the changes movies like Jonah Hex, Thor, and Green Lantern make to the comic stories.  But what about the ones that aren't about to hit the movie theaters?  It got me thinking of those characters where I would have to repress my inner geekdom if the movie changed something in the story or diverged from the comic. So I'm counting down the Top 5 superhero adaptations that would make me nervous. I’m sticking with superhero books here, so awesome characters like Cal McDonald aren’t being overlooked; it is just a list for another time.
