Hangover Thursday: Winter Beer is Coming
It’s Hangover Thursday, how’s your head? Mine is clear this morning, I’m saving all my drinking for later this week when all the holiday shenanigans kick off. I might be brave enough to bust out the Tom and Jerry recipe this year but only time will tell.
Earlier in the year I showcased an artist who was making beer logos using the various factions of Game of Thrones. These types of designs are all over the internet and usually pop up on sites like Tee Magnet and Shirt Woot. I’m always divided on these things, I love the creativity in some of them but it is also strange to see someone selling things based on a licensed property that they have no claim to. Luckily I won’t have to feel bad when I enjoy an Iron Throne Blonde Ale.
Ommegang brewery has teamed HBO to create beer based on the Game of Thrones series. The very first beer, the Iron Throne Blonde Ale is going to be released in March. What else happens at the end of March? Oh yeah, the start of Season 3! This is an amazing tie in. Think of how many viewing parties are going to start off with people popping open a bottle of Iron Throne. It is going to be available in 750 ml bottles and on draft. They are currently working on sword-like tap handles. Game of Thrones tap handles. Does it need repeated one more time? Game of Thrones tap handles. That’s fucking awesome.
There are three more beers in the Game of Thrones line that are in the works. Ommegang is a good brewery though and they aren’t rushing this. The second beer won’t debut till fall and the other two beers probably won’t be released until the next seasons of the show are released. It’s a smart move, it shows they are actually thinking about the product and not just slapping new labels on existing brews.

Write Like the Wind
I was lucky enough to see Paul and Storm a few years ago when they opened for Jonathan Coulton. It seems every time I turn around they are doing something else awesome in the Geek community. Things like their concerts at Pax, the Rockband songs, becoming the Bards in Pax’s live DND game, and my personal favorite, the FudgieThon (Storm raised money by eating an entire Fudgie the Whale in one sitting).
Today’s video is one of those things I just found this weekend. I was sending it to all of the people I know who would enjoy it when I said to myself that I really just needed to put it up on That F’ing Monkey so everyone can see it. If this is the first you’re hearing of Paul and Storm, please spend some time on their website because they are awesome.

Hangover Thursday: Game of Breweries
It’s Hangover Thursday, how’s your head? I had a light drinking night last night, but I did hit my 50 beer milestone last night at World of Beer. A bottle of Guinness Foreign Extra was the beer that put me over. This week we are talking about beer that doesn’t exist.
Redbubble user Satansbrand has been busy designing beer labels based around George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones series. If you like one of the designs they are available as stickers and as shirts. I think the Night’s Watch label is pretty amazing, but it is combing one of my favorite beers with my favorite group from the series.
There are a lot more designs than just the Starks and the Night’s Watch. The Lannisters, Greyjoys, Baratheons, Tullys, Targaryens, and the Seaworth all get the beer label treatment. I really like the designs because to me, they seem subtly geeky, although I guess with the series success on HBO liking the fantasy series probably isn't seen as geeky anymore. Game of Thrones Beat Down
Are you enjoying HBO’s Game of Thrones? Has the intricate plot possibly caused some healthy debate with your friends and family about what is going to happen next? If so there really are only two things you can do. You can wait a week to see the next episode, or you can go out and buy the books. Fandom loves the second option because then you can act like you’ve been a fan for years and turn your nose down at people just discovering it!
Oh, I forgot about the third option. When arguing about Game of Thrones you can also take a swing at the person you’re talking to and then throw them out a window. According to the Smoking Gun that is what Michael Podniestrzanski did to his cousin Joshua Ross. The two got into a fight about "who was going to win" and then Ross was thrown out a window. Michael has been arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery and as of 4/25/11 was in the county jail.
Podniestrzanski and Ross are more then just cousins, they are also roommates. So it may have been about Game of Thrones or this could have been months of built up aggression over their roommates other annoying habits. Regardless I think they need to update the rules to the Game of Thrones board game to include fisticuffs and defenestration.
For the record, I've have the first Game of Throwns novel in my nightstand for a year and a half. So far I've made it to the fifth chapter. I'm sure it's good, I just haven't "gotten" it yet.

Bring me the box of Ferrets! or Random Thought Download.
I am going to continue the trend from last week and make this just a random stuff in my craw post.
First up is the Cal McDonald Detective Tales book from Bloody Pulp Books.
It came in the mail on Saturday. It comes in an evidence bag with what seems to be the date that your book was sent out, mine is 4/9/11. For some damn reason I thought this was fucking awesome, it is just a random detail that sticks out to me. As for the contents of the book, I like to call it "bite-sized (pill sized?) Cal". Why you ask? Well let me tell you. It contains 2 short stories - The "Y" Incision and Nocturnal Invasions. These stories are able to be read in about 15 minutes. I have only read The "Y" Incision so far and it is a great read. Mr. Niles has a gift of description, especially when that description is straight up disgusting. When he writes about disembowelment you feel like you are looking at the entrails pouring out right in front of you. That is of course a complement to his writing. There is a point in the story that had me flashing on Invader Zim, which is fan-damn-tastic when put into the context of Cal's world. I would HIGHLY recommend picking this up before it is gone, plus it is only five bucks. I personally can't wait until the next one comes out.
Now for your Hockey playoffs update. The Lighting tied up the series with the hated Penguins on Friday night with a 5-1 trouncing after a sad showing the game before with a 3-0 loss. The next game is tonight. My 6 game Lightning win is still in effect. Tonight's game is being played in Tampa.
Detroit on the other hand is looking to repeat last years effort of crushing the Coyotes hopes of moving to the second round. The Wings are up 2-0 in the series and are not looking to let up as they move to Phoenix for game three tonight.
Stay tuned next week as Ken and I update the playoff beard situation.
Finally I was going to talk about the premiere of "A Game of Thrones" last night. However because I do not have HBO and my totally legal search of the interwebs produced nothing for me this morning, I can't talk about it yet. This makes me sad, so if any of you fine folks watched it let me know what you thought in the comments.

Winter is coming.
Wow, how does one follow an epic like Yank "F'ing" Justice? I remember seeing that damn show as a kid and at one point my brother was a hardcore monster truck fan. Just goes to show that you never know what is going to explode into pop culture at any given time (like the end of the vampire mythos, I am looking at you "Twilight", I never would have thought that I would support book burning...)
Ok on to the subject of this post.
I read quite a bit, in a normal year it ranges in the 50 or so books. So I find it hard to fathom that I had not read George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. With all the talk about the upcoming HBO show based on the first book "A Game Of Thrones" I decided that it was about time I checked it out. I am incredibly happy that I did.
The "Sookie Stackhouse" books are what the HBO show "True Blood" is based on. Now as much as I hate the "Twilight" series, I was very reluctant to dip my foot into that pool again. (Yep I read the first "Twilight" book, I like to have some knowledge of what I hate so it is not just blind rage.) Although Harris is light years ahead of Meyer in all aspects of literary skill, it is still not my cup of ale. I have just never been a fan of vampires as care bears, Count Orlok is how a vamp should act.
So there ya go, my attempt to class the joint up a touch and focus on some reading that does not have pictures of people in capes. So how about you gentle reader? Have any recommendations for good books? Throw them in the comments or on That F'ing Monkey's facebook page. Let your F'ing voice be heard!! <-- Me thinks that is going to be my catch phrase, kinda like "Excelsior!". Whatcha think?

If you have not read this book, do it and do it now. Even if you don't like the fantasy genre check it out. The character development and story progression are amazing, and the setting is extremely well thought out. I will not go into the synopsis because the book has been out for 15 years so the interwebs has had plenty of time to take care of that. Now I am really looking forward to the show, of course I do have a completely hetro crush on Sean Bean but that is for another day...
Some other books I am going back and checking out are "The Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher, "Discworld" by Sir Terry Pratchett, and the "Sookie Stackhouse" series by Charlaine Harris. So far I am really digging on the wizard for hire Harry Dresden, kinda puts one in the mind of a PG rated Cal Mcdonald (from "Criminal Macabre").
"Discworld" is just fun all around. Sir Pratchett is great at off the wall humor that flows well within his own world. If "A Game of Thrones" is a little too high fantasy for ya, then perhaps you will enjoy some fantasy that does not take itself seriously at all.
