Scribblenauts Unmasked Reveal Part 2

Welcome to the second part of our Scribblenauts character reveal.  Scribblenauts Unmasked is a puzzle game with a huge database of DC characters.  Last week I named 10 fairly obscure characters that I wanted to see make the game.  Yesterday we covered the first 5 and only 2 of my picks actually made it into the game.  Today’s list is made up of the remaining 5.  Read below to see who made the video game cut. 

Wild Dog

Wild Dog is in the game!  I was thrilled to see that hockey mask.  The odd thing is that in his history the game lists him active in Chicago.  Wild Dog was from the Quad Cities.  I should probably be ashamed that I knew that.  Anyway, Wild Dog is one of my favorite comic characters so I’m glad he made it into the game.

G.I. Robot

G.I. Robot is in the game!  J.A.K.E. is listed as a member of the Creature Commandos in the game.  For some reason he looks pretty angry in the game, I’m not really sure why they did that. 

Simon Dark

Simon Dark is not in the game.  Despite being based in Gotham, I don’t know that Simon is totally owned by DC.  I have a feeling that has something to do with it. 

Terrific Whatzit

The Terrific Whatzit is not in the game.  His nephew is in the game!  This isn’t really surprising; Fastback is far better known than Whatzit.  The Crash, the super fast turtle for the Just Alot of Animals is not in the game either.

Probert

Probert is not in the game.  Hardly surprising, this was the most obscure character on my list.  Still, it would have been fun.

So only 4 of my 10 characters actually made it into Scribblenauts Unmasked.  This makes it seem like the character database is lacking.  It isn’t.  I’ve had more fun typing random characters into the Batcomputer than actually playing the game.  Check back tomorrow for some more in depth Flash coverage.

Scribblenauts Unmasked Part 2

Yesterday we started talking about Scribblenauts Unmasked, a DC comics version of the hit puzzle game Scribblenauts.  One of the big hype points of the game is the sheer number of DC characters that are said to be included.  A claim like that ensured the first thing I would do when I got the game would be to throw some strange and obscure characters just to see if they are included. 

We already covered the first five characters yesterday and today we’re going to cover five more.  When the game comes out later this month I’ll post all the results and include some screen shots of the Scribblenaut version for each of the characters that made it into the game. 

Wild Dog

DC’s 1997 answer to Marvel’s Punisher is one of my favorite comic characters.  Much like the “Dark Flash” from yesterday, Wild Dog’s identity was kept from the readers.  His first mini-series followed a few potential people that Wild Dog could be and in the end revealed him to be ex-Marine Jack Wheeler.  After his four issue series Wild Dog was part of Action Comics Weekly.  After that he’s been used incredibly sparingly.  He had a cameo in Infinite Crisis and in an issue of Booster Gold after that he’s been mostly forgotten. 

G.I. Robot

I had to dive into my own backlog of posts for this one because I was sure that I had already written about J.A.K.E.; I was wrong.  There have been a number of characters named G.I. Robot, Joe and Mac appeared in Weird War Tales in 1962 and 1966.  When most people here the name they think of J.A.K.E. 1 and J.A.K.E. 2 who showed up in Weird War Tales in 1981 and 1982.  Jakes’s big power seems to be sacrificing himself for others.  Expect a full write up on J.A.K.E. 2’s first appearance, it’s a book I picked off the spinner rack as a kid and it is amazing.

Simon Dark

Simon debuted in his own mini-series in 2007.  The dark book took place in a side of Gotham that most had never seen before.  Created by Steve Niles and Scott Hampton Simon the character was actually stitched together with science and magic.  Things for Simon get very, very weird.  The big question about his inclusion in Scribblenauts will be if he is wholly owned by DC or partially creator owned.  Either way it’d be great to see Simon included.

Terrific Whatzit

I had to go silly at some point didn’t I?  The Terrific Whatzit is a character that debuted way back in 1944.  This funny animal version of the Golden Age Flash is a turtle who removes his shell when he dons his costume.  Without his shell no one can tell what kind of animal he is, so everyone calls him a Whatzit.  I’d say his chances are pretty slim to actually make the game.  They may surprise me though and include characters like the Zoo Crew.

Probert

Scribblenauts Unmasked will forever be my favorite game if they include this one.  Probert was introduced in a 1994 issue of Green Lantern Corps Quarterly.  He is based off of the hockey player Bob Probert.  Probert is a bounty hunter that was offered a power ring to bring in another Lantern that has gone rogue.  Probert refused to wear a ring and set off on his own.  Eventually he internalized the ring’s power and took down the other Lantern.  He made a few appearances in Guy Gardner: Warrior but hasn’t been seen since then.

Super Alloy Green Lantern

I wasn’t paying attention when DC started their Super Alloy line of figures.  I don’t think I can really be blamed though; it started with Superman and Batman.  When I’m looking at solicits I skim over the Batmans and Supermans pretty quickly these days.  It was when I saw pictures of the Super Alloy Green Lantern figure that I stopped and did a quadruple take.  It’s a seriously impressive looking figure with a seriously impressive looking price tag.

Approximately 12 inches tall this figure is 80% die cast material.  The paint is a mixture of glossy metallic paints, matte metallic paints, and polished metal with a protective covering.   The figure comes with five different sets of hands and has more than 25 points of articulation.  It also comes with clear green plastic armor that clips on over the figures.  The figure stand has an adjustable claw to help pose Green Lantern.  The figure has it all and it should, because it costs around 360 dollars. 

I almost forgot one of the coolest features of the figure, the LED lights.  There are LED lights in the figures eyes and chest emblem that are controlled by remote control.  There are also LED lights in the ring on the “fist hand” and in the accessory Lantern; neither of these are controlled by the remote control.  All fo the batteries are removable and the figure comes with a screwdriver to open the battery compartments. 

You know when the figure comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth that it’s pretty serious.  It’s a beautiful figure.  I like figures like these because if I was a Hal Jordan fan I could have this on display and know that I’d never really need to buy another figure of him.  Back when I was collecting Star Wars I’d by every X-Wing that came out.  Eventually I bought the very expensive Code 3 version and sold all the others.  I had that perfect piece I didn’t need any others.  I feel this is that piece for Jordan fans.

Gifted Volume 1

While I didn’t really mention it on That F’ing Monkey I recently ran into a bit of trouble with my truck.  It wasn’t just one little thing either, it was a combination of things that worked in unison to create a perfect storm of mechanical problems.  I was very lucky that Uncle Sam had recently given me my money back and I was somehow responsible enough that I didn’t instantly run out and spend it on new toys and video games.  Yale Stewart isn’t as lucky as I was, he actually needs a new car.

 Yale Stewart is the creator of the JL8 web comic that puts the Justice League in elementary school.  I’ve spoken about the comic before because at the moment it is my favorite iteration of the DC Universe.  I’ve been quite vocal saying the New 52 isn’t doing it for me.  JL8 gets the characters so much better than the comics currently in shops.  If you haven’t read the strip you can do so by clicking HERE. 

Well it’s pretty hard to make money off of characters you don’t own and Yale has stated that he is in some financial difficulties.  So how do you help someone who twice a week produces a fantastic web comic?  Luckily JL8 isn’t the first thing Yale has done.  There is also a 32 page comic called Gifted.  You can purchase the PDF of the comic by clicking HERE.  You pay what you want for the comic and Yale gets to build up a new car fund.  Check it out.

Flash Friday: DC Super Friends Busy Book

Happy Flash Friday everyone!  I picked up the subject of this week’s Flash Friday a little while ago but every time I went to write about it something else exciting came up.  As a lifelong Flash fan I realize that Flash items are few and far between when compared to Superman and Batman.  Because of that I’m keeping an extra close eye on Flash merchandise aimed at children.  I want my son to be able to have his own Flash stuff.  I’m sure it won’t stop him from wanting to play with the things in dad’s glass display cases, but it can’t hurt.

With this strategy in mind I realize I’ll be buying things when they are available even if they aren’t age appropriate.  I can’t chance seeing something on the shelf and hoping it will still be there in two or three years when my son is finally ready for it.  So I’ll buy them early, stash them away, and just surprise him with them when he’s old enough.  The first of these is the DC Super Friends Busy Book.

I ran into these and Barnes and Nobles.  It was on one of their center tables and marked down for 10 dollars.  There were Busy Books for all sorts of different licensed characters.  I picked up the Super Friend set and flipped through it to make sure the Flash was in.  Once I had seen that I knew it was coming home with us. 

The Busy Book is a large book with about 10 pages.  They’re made of the thick cardboard type material used in kid books.  It’s glossy and has bright illustrations.  It also has a large box at the end of the book that contains a fold out play area and little figures.  What figures are included?  Of course it comes with Batman, Superman, and Robin.  To round out the Super Friends there is Flash, John Stewart Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Hawkman.  .  It’s surprising that Wonder Woman got left out here.  Instead of Wonder Woman we get an adorable little Krypto.  Of course you need villains so Lex Luthor, Joker, Penguin, and Riddler are thrown in

I can’t wait to see the play mat laid across the floor.  As I stated before, it’s too early for this set at the moment.  If I gave it to him now he’d enjoy turning the book’s pages.  The action figures would quickly go into his mouth.  Superman is tough, but I’m pretty sure he’d come out with some bite marks.  One day the Flash and Hawkman will defeat the Joker and Penguin at the abandoned carnival but for now the Busy Book will be up on the shelf until the time is right.    

Flash Friday: 5 Inch Flash

Happy Flash Friday everyone! This week I ran across an interesting DC line that I hadn’t seen mentioned anywhere else. I was at the local Target wandering the isles again when I found the Batman end-cap. There were all sorts of ridiculous versions of Batman, but sitting under all of that were two boxes of superhero plush that I had never seen before.

There were piles of these oddly shaped little guys. Odd shaped heads, tiny legs, and crazy sized chests. They almost look like they were supposed to be some kind of DC crossover with M&Ms, like the chocolates did with Star Wars a few years ago. They almost all look constipated too.

As usual, when I saw anything DC related I started looking to see if the Flash is included. To my surprise he is. The tag opens up and shows the entire 5 inch line; Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and Flash. My Target had two boxes of these things and the only character sold out was the Flash. In hindsight I’m glad they were out of him. It would have been an instant buy, now I’m pretty sure I can live without this one.

The other thing I find interesting is that both the tags and the box on these guys sport the New 52 character designs. I think it is the first time I’ve seen them used outside something that was meant for a comic book store. From the way DC talked when the New 52 launched I thought we'd be seeing this look everywhere.

Bwackest Night

It is called Bwackest Night by Charles Ettinger. I love how Daffy has the Orange ring, because Geoff Johns said that Larfleeze sounds like Daffy in his head.

The Thoughts, They Download Randomly

Welcome back to another Random Thought Download, wherein I have a few things that don't form into a post unto themselves.

Last week I talked about my school girl like crush on voice actors. Well here is a trailer for a well known voice actor's movie. Full disclosure on this one - I hate Family Guy, American Dad makes my eyes bleed, and The Cleavland Show is like watching a coat hanger abortion. However Seth MacFarlane is a pretty good voice actor. I loved his Johann Kraus in Hellboy II. "Ted" looks kinda funny, and the trailer has it's moments. Looks to be a fun change from the summer blockbuster season.

The finals for Lord Stanley's Cup are well underway with the Kings up 2 games to nothing on the Devils. I don't have a dog in this fight and these two teams are quite a ways off my radar. Still it is playoff Hockey so I am keeping up to date. Also if you had told me at the start of the playoffs that Los Angeles would be 14-2 going into game 3 of the finals, I would have had you put into Arkham for being criminally insane.

 And finally the post all 2 of you were waiting for. Last week DC stated that Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern, is ......no longer in radio broadcasting. Oh and he is gay, on Earth-2, in the New 52. I have been getting quite a few texts and messages along the lines of "I told you Green Lantern was gay!". This is a non-issue for me. For one I don't care that a character I like is gay. Two it is on Earth-2, the one no one cares about. From the looks of it they have de-aged him from his old JSA self. At the end of the day I still like Alan Scott and I just hope that him being gay is not his defining characteristic and that he stays a fully fleshed out character.

Green Lantern Theme and Gamer Pics

With the Xbox 360’s ever changing dashboard and avatar system the old standbys of themes and gamer pics are becoming less and less important to the Xbox community. It used to be that you identified your friends by their tag and that little square picture they had chosen for themselves. Before the newest layout themes used to really change the way your background looked. Both of these items are still useful of course, but not as important as they used to be.

New themes and Gamer Pics are still being made though and the best part is that many of them are free. If you check out the Xbox Marketplace right now you will see a free theme and a free set of gamer pics to celebrate the Green Lantern Cartoon that starts this Saturday on Cartoon Network. While the Green Lantern pics are based on the cartoon, some of them are simple things like the GL symbol or the ring itself. Cool stuff. Free stuff. Download it if you’re a Green Lantern fan.

Green Lantern HeroWorld

As someone who is about to be a father, I’m very excited by the amount of DC toys being released in the younger kid toy lines. With all the HeroWorld and Imaginext stuff even the smallest Batman fan is going to be happy. I guess Fisher Price are banking on the Green Lantern cartoon getting popular, because the Green Lantern is getting a whole line of HeroWorld toys. Some of them are already on the shelves of your local Toys R Us.

Starting with the biggest of the sets I found is the Green Lantern Jet. It comes with a Hal Jordan figure. The jet has an “actionator” dial that pops out the wings, makes sounds, and lights up. It also has landing gear, shoots a missile, and has a flip down “flight grip”. I love the toys that actually come with handles like that. It was one of the reasons the Captain Power ships were so cool. Since this is a bigger set, it comes with the largest price tag. Flying around your living room in the Green Lantern Jet will cost you 35 dollars.

Tomar-Re comes with a Turbo Sled. The Turbo Sled also has an “actionator” dial. It doesn’t do quite as much as the jet though. Turing this one will spin the turbo booster at the back of the Sled. The Sled also has a clear green missile that fires from the front of it. Almost half the cost of the jet you can get Tomar-Re and his Sled for 16 dollars.  Still, let's be honest here, there is a Tomar-Re toy for children.  That is awesome.

You can’t have Green Lantern toys without including Kilowog. The Wog comes with a motorcycle that’s ready for battle. There is a cannon mounted on the front of the bike that shoots out a clear green fist. Turn the “actionator” and two clear green shields pop out from the sides of the bike and cover the front end. I thought it was the coolest design of the three. Wog and his hog have the same price point as Tomar-Re, so if you want to take him home it’ll cost you 16 dollars.

Finally I took a picture of the back of the packaging. I didn’t see these single figures anywhere, but I think it is a pretty interesting line up. I’m sure plenty of adult collectors will be grabbing these sets. Atrocitus and Sinestro may be cool, but obviously the highlights of this line are the Dex-Starr and the B’Dg.

DC Super Hero Legos

The amazing looking DC Superhero Legos are starting to his store shelves. The report I read said they were showing up at Toys R Us, but I’m sure they’ll be on shelves pretty quickly so that everyone can get in on that Christmas spending.

 The traditional mini-fig sized sets come a few different options, most of them are Batman themed though. There is a small Batman/Catwoman set, a Batwing/Joker-Copter set, a Batmobile/Two-Face set, and the incredibly cool looking Lex Luther power armor set. The Lex set also comes with Superman and Wonder Woman. Besides just being cool looking it is automatically my favorite for not being Bat related. We’re also supposed to be getting a new Batcave set, but I don’t think it has been released yet.

There are also a few figures in the Bionicle/Hero Factory scale. Surprise they have a Batman and a Joker! I know, I know, you’re as shocked as I am. The other figures isn’t Superman, it’s Green Lantern. I’m not a huge fan of these. Something about them just looks odd. They look more like giant robots dressed like Batman or Green Lantern. That being said I’ll happily buy the Flash if one comes out.

I doubt I’ll be picking any of these up, but that temptation will be there every time I see them. Why does Lego always want to take all my money?

No cute power ring pun

Well I saw Green Lantern on Friday, and must say it was not as bad as you have heard. It is not great mind you, but it is not bad. Also I saw it in 2D the only way to watch movies if you are over 12. I have already railed against 3D here, so I will leave it alone for now. Here is my review, with no spoilers.



First off, Ryan Reynolds is not comic book Hal. He is Ryan Reynolds playing a character that happens to be named Hal Jordan. I didn't not like him, he just should never have tried to be Hal.



Now on to the good. I really liked what they did with Parallax, it makes sense within the movie-verse without having to go deep into the mythology. It looked okay for the most part, although sometimes it just looked like a giant blob of CGI smoke. Once I let my nerd rage over Ryan fade I enjoyed him for the most part. I really liked the stuff on Oa and the training bits were quite awesome, if a little short. I got quite a chuckle when Hal got "Captain Americaed" (that is right I just used Captain America as a verb - suck it.) I was also in nerdvana picking out all the lanterns that popped up in cameo. (Hannu and Bzzd - hells yes! Little sad I did not see Morro but what ya gonna do?) The constructs were pretty cool to see in motion. The costumes were not as bad as the pictures suggest and they only go all ribbed and weird when Hal is exerting lots of will. Mark Strong as Sinestro was fucking great and he got way too little screen time. I am sure we will see more of him in the sequel.



The bad. There is no time to really have believable arch for any character. Hal seems to just change personalities mid stride. Carol is just a skirt. Tom "Pieface" is just a basic audience proxy does not even get named until later in the film. Hector Hammond just comes off as a prick and his motivation is just him being a jackass. It was also a really strange call to have Hammond as the villain under Parallax. They waste Amanda Waller as just a generic scientist instead of the total bad ass non powered human that stands toe to toe with Superman that she is. The combination of the earthbound and space scenes can't compare to "Thor" which handled the dichotomy in an amazing way. This just feels like they took two movies and smashed them together. The post credits scene really does not fit with how the character was acting in the main movie.

All in all I enjoyed the flick. It is a popcorn summer movie that almost hit the mark, but fell just short. It is worth seeing on the big screen for the space stuff alone. Turn off the comic nerd part of the brain and enjoy it for what it is.

Green Lantern of 2814 Prepare Yourself...

So Green Lantern gets released on Friday and you can expect my review next week, today however I am kinda sick of it.



But your a huge Lantern fan - is what you are saying to yourself. Yep it's true I am. However it is an embarrassment of riches. I am starting to know what a hardcore Bat fan feels like, with the over saturation of the character. You can't turn your head without seeing some tie-in for the flick.Throw something green on and BAM! Lantern tie-in. Avocado on a sub? Green Lantern.



Green jelly on a donut? Green Lantern. It is almost like the superhero St. Patrick's Day. Throw some green food dye in it and you have GL beer. Yum.

Green Lantern of Death Star

I understand that being green makes it easy for the mainstream to associate with the film. Although I hear people confusing it with Green Hornet, so that's the mainstream for ya.

It does not help that I am not really enjoying the current comic storyline and am going back an re-reading pre Rebirth stories. Really just to step away from Johns for a while. He is an great writer, but may be overextending currently.

Also I just read an X book. I have not read an X book since Whedon wrote his first few issues and brought back Colossus. The book I picked up was Uncanny X-Force The Apocalypse Solution and it is fantastic. It basically the "would you kill Hitler as a baby" moral question. Even though it has the comics version of the GL saturation - Deadpool - I still enjoyed it immensely and recommend checking it out. It even forced me to do something that I never thought I would have to do - use the interwebs to look up a comic character. Fantomex, a character I had never heard of. This guy sure has a stereotypical convoluted comics back story.

Green Lantern Games

Yesterday we talked about the upcoming Green Lantern video game, Rise of the Manhunters. It should be exciting for Green Lantern fans because there has never been a strictly Green Lantern video game. Green Lantern has made appearances in video games though, and we’re going toe be talking about those today. We aren’t talking about DC Universe Online though, fuck that game.

Before we get started I want to point out that Green Lantern had the good fortune not to be included in 1995’s Justice League Task Force. That shit taco masquerading as a 2D fighting game is so bad it is almost unplayable. I don’t know why Green Lantern wasn’t included in this train wreck, but he should consider himself lucky.

As far as I can tell 2006’s Justice League Heroes is the first video game to feature the Green Lantern. I realize someone is probably yelling at the computer screen right now wondering how I could have forgotten some game I don’t know the name of. Justice League Heroes was very similar to Marvel’s X-Men Legends and Ultimate Alliance except that you controlled two heroes instead of four. It wasn’t a perfect game, but I enjoyed it.

John Stewart was the main Green Lantern in the game. You could unlock two other looks for him. One made him bald and one put him in his older costumer. Hal and Kyle were both unlockable characters in this one too. Unfortunately they didn’t have different move sets then John, so if you include the alternate costumes it was pretty much five versions of the same character.

Hal Jordan was also in the Mortal Kombat vs DC game that came out in 2008. Not bloody enough for Mortal Kombat fans this one has been pretty quickly forgotten now that the new Kombat game has hit. Along with the Teen rating that probably doomed it, MK vs DC has a story written by That F’ing Monkey favorites Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Grey.

Not only did you get Hal in all his construct creating glory, one of the battle locations was on Oa. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me. The game got a pretty bad wrap for not being able to tear out spines. I’m not a huge fighting game fan, but I had fun plying this. Green Lantern had all sorts of construct hammers and saws at his disposal. I’d like to say I was awesome with the Flash in this one, but sadly I was best using Captain Marvel.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters

If you haven’t been down the toy isle of your favorite story yet you might not have noticed that the Green Lantern invasion has begun. The Green Lantern Colossal Cannon is freaking awesome by the way, I’m not sure it is 30 dollars awesome, but it is worth putting on and running around the store for a few minutes. We’ve already talked a lot about some of the stranger things coming out to tie into the film, but we haven’t mentioned Rise of the Manhunters yet.

Incase you haven’t seen any mention of it, Rise of the Manhunters is coming out on June 7th for the 360, PS3, Wii, DS, and 3DS. Based on the movie version of Green Lantern they got Ryan Reynolds to actually voice GL in the game. Kilowog, Tomar-Re, and Sinestro are listed as different voice actors though. For those not familiar with Green Lantern lore the Manhunters are androids created by the Guardians. There were kind of like a beta version of the Green Lanterns.

If you’re worried about the script for the game, they managed to get Marv Wolfman to write it. That is some serious comicbook cred. More info for the game can be found on their facebook, which is located here. Check it out for lots of exclusive screen shots. They are going to be adding new ones every Thursday. From the screens I’ve seen the Wii, 3DS and DS versions seem to have a cartoony look to them. I think I like it.

I saw a demo at my local Best Buy and got to see Hal making giant swords, fling robots around the screen, and creating the construct chain gun. The game play looked similar to a God of War style brawler, but I only saw one level. The game does have co-op, players can be either Hal or Sinestro. At least from advance word it doesn’t look like we’re going to get to play as Kilowog. Since our favorite Bolovax Vik may be unplayable I decided to run with the idea of three other Green Lantern aliens that probably won’t be playable; but should totally be added as DLC.

Arkkis Chummuck
If you’ve only started reading Green Lantern since Rebirth you’ve missed out on one of the most badass Lanterns ever. This is the guy who fought his sector’s Green Lantern, defeated him, and ate him. He then used his ring to stop the war between his planet and the one the Green Lantern was from. The Guardians put him on trial and not only found him innocent, they made him a Lantern! Arkkis sacrificed himself fight Maaldor but this is the movie universe, they can totally bring him back.

Bzzd
If honorable wolfmen aren’t your thing, how about Bzzd? Probably my favorite Lantern created since the relaunch of the Corps, Bzzd looks like a hornet from Earth but is from the planet Apiaton. One of the smaller Lanterns every, Bzzd was extremely brave and used his ring to stand along his full sized friends. Not that I was creating a list of fallen Lanterns, but Bzzd sacrificed himself when the Lanterns were fighting Mongul. It was a very, very sad moment.

Mogo
We can’t forget Bzzd’s partner though! Mogo, the Green Lantern planet! I realize there is no way that he’d ever be playable but it makes me laugh to think about playing as a planet in the vide game. The cut scenes would be the best ever.
