Saturday News Roundup

Saturday is the last day in my work week, so you know it is a good day for me. There are a ton of things we’re going to briefly cover. Some news stories that broke this week, some reminders of what cool things are on TV this weekend, and a bit of Mass Effect news.

All-Star Weekend
Starting off with hockey news, the Superskills competition is this Saturday night at 7pm. The actual All-Star game is on Sunday at 4pm. Team Lidstrom and Team Staal drafted their players last night and you can see the full roster list here. While I love watching the Superskills competition, the All-Star game itself has been boring for a while. The new setup is pretty cool and has me interested again. Also the first big presentation of the Guardian Project is going to happen. Will it be awesome, terrible, or somewhere in between? So terrible it is awesome will also be accepted as a possible answer. Next week Brandon and I will start our reviews of each Guardian. Expect a Division a week.

Bane
Bane has been all over the news lately with the new Batman casting news. When written intelligently and not just as a mindless bruiser, Bane is my favorite Batman villain. I’m not sure exactly why I love him; it might be the luchador mask. Anyway, I had missed all the previews of the latest Young Justice cartoon so I had no idea he was going to be showing up. I was very happy the way they portrayed him. He was smart, manipulative, and strong. He was voiced by Danny Trejo. So freaking amazing.

There is lots more after the jump, check it out.

Flashpoint
Well DC gave us the names of the Flashpoint mini-series that are coming out. These are in addition to the actual Flashpoint book and who knows how many related one-shots.

BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE
DEADMAN AND THE FLYING GRAYSONS
CITIZEN COLD
DEATHSTROKE & THE CURSE OF THE RAVAGER
THE OUTSIDER
ABIN SUR THE GREEN LANTERN
PROJECT: SUPERMAN
FRANKENSTEIN & THE CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN
SECRET SEVEN
EMPEROR AQUAMAN
WONDER WOMAN AND THE FURIES
LOIS LANE AND THE RESISTANCE
KID FLASH LOST
THE WORLD OF FLASHPOINT

It looks like a lot of books. I don’t understand the backlash I’ve seen about it though. If this is anything like Blackest Night or Age of Apocalypse you won’t have to read everything to understand what is going on. I’ll be picking up the Kid Flash Lost and Citizen Cold books for sure. I’ll probably be getting World of Flashpoint also. The rest will hopefully be trade-ified at some point.

Mass Effect Alternate Appearance Pack 2
X-Box 360 Achievements is stating that the second Appearance Pack for Mass Effect 2 is coming out in February. The first pack had given us new clothing for Jack, Thane, and Garrus. Jack and Thane’s were ruined by silly sunglasses. I would have passed, but in a moment of weakness I bought it…just so we could patch that damage to Garrus’ armor. I remember long ago Bioware asking what other appearance changes people would like, but it had happened so long ago I had almost forgotten about it. I can’t see a lot of 360 users picking it up, but they can get some of that PS3 money I suppose. It would have to be a pretty amazing pack for me to pick this one up.

Mega-python versus Gatoroid
It is happening tonight!! I talked about the ridiculous plot earlier (check it out here). If you ever wanted to see Tiffany fight Debbie Gibson, check it out. If you ever wanted to see giant pythons and steroid enhanced alligators fight, check it out. If neither of those things sound interesting to you…well then I’m really not sure what you’re doing on this site.

Thundercats
Pictures of the new Thundercats hit the internet this week and forums all over were filled with people’s raped childhoods. I really hate that term. I don’t think it looks bad. Besides that Transformers Animated and Iron Man: Armored Adventures have taught me to not judge a cartoon by its character design. I grew to love the design of both of those shows even though I was originally put off by them. And really; can we take off those nostalgia blinders for a moment and just admit that the Thundercats was not a good cartoon? When you make the writing on GI Joe and Transformers look good, you know you’re doing something wrong. I’m willing to give the new show a try before condemning it.

You don’t punch cars, you elbow drop them…Kapow!

  1. Yeah the internet was abuzz for that Thundercats pic. I am going on record and saying that I fucking hated Thundercats as a kid and that has not changed in the least as an adult. Keep this in mind kids, nothing is as good as you remember!
